addendum to the first chapter - Nice Stuff in Paris
Pinned on the front of any public building (and some churches, the ones from the Revolution time) we have the Republic’s motto… which even if it isn’t nothing more than a crock of shit to most of the people (which answer immediately “L'eau, le gaz, l'electricité!” when confronted with it), it’s still a good idea (the Freedom is from the mairie of the 9th in rue Drouot, the Equality from the church of Notre Dame de Lorette in the Châteaudun and the Brotherhood from the maternelle in the Rochechouart).

O
confitado!!
The friend who gives me coffee, sickeningly
nice, insists always in shaking my hand while asking if “Ça va?” and if I miss
for more than three days immediately asks if I went “a Lisbonne”. In the
background the indian chef, author of some unspeakable dishes they foist to the
“bobôs” (bourgeois-bohèmes), this week they had a dessert made of confited
toblerone bar!!
A
My friend the baker, of the decent bread and
not-so-bad cakes, here straightening the maubeuges; sullen, when in an
exceptional good mood she’ll let us complain of the weather with her, the rest
of the time is just “ce sera tout?” and next! To perfection she’s just lacking
the “bolas de berlim”.
O
camarada do quiosque, grande amigo meu todas as quartas-feiras que o Charlie
não espeta com o profeta na capa. Especialmente dado a fazer caretas e sons
incoerentes à Madalena.
My mate from the newsstand, a friend
every wednesday that Charlie doesn’t sticks the prophet on the first page.
Loves to grimace and make incoherent sounds to Madalena.
Poder
Being able to take comics home from
the public libraries… more than 15 thousand books just in the Marguerite
Yourcenar, where I usually go.
Poder
Being able to buy the Charlie Hebdo
every week, without having to go to the airport, without a worry, without paying
through the nose for it.
O
Montaigne, o brilhante, genial, engraçado, anti-etnocêntrico Montaigne!! Um
Montaigne, the brilliant, great, funny,
anti-ethnocentric Montaigne!! A Michel worth being friends with.
A
mastigar.
The publishing might of french
comics, enough to guarantee a bunch of free publicity magazines, in good coated
paper, that Madalena loves to rip and chew.
no balcão).
Having a decent expresso. The glass of water
it’s not guaranteed (it’s just me that go to posh places) and the sugar in a
little bag is a real anomaly (usually it’s cubes in metal pots over the counter).
The spoon with the concave down and the hold hanging from the saucer (instead
of all the spoon on the saucer, concave facing up like in Portugal) intrigued
me until I learn that traditionally the french set the table like that, with
the concave sides of spoons and forks facing down, unlike what we portuguese,
or you anglos do.
The unavoidable portuguese corner in every
grocery that I’ve been to: there’s always beer, tuna, olives and Maria cookies,
everytime.
A clara, simples e
The clear, simple and absolute separation
between Church and State; something truly exotic for a portuguese… now that the government is pushing for a
marriage for all law and the Church (better said, the churches, because the
great rabbi and the president of the islamic council came to public too) is
trying to mobilize the opposition, the question TF1 (the most seen tv channel)
made to it’s viewers was this one.
A tarte normande!
perfeita.
The norman pie! A northern delicacy made of
apples and about two pounds of butter for slice… in the moment it’s good, but
after three or four days in the fridge is just perfect.
The niceness of holding the exit door to the
next passenger of the subway (I’ve seen people turning back to apologize for
not doing it), just comparable to the thousand and three ritual ways to ask
Seeing the tourists getting run over in the bike
paths by uncompromising cyclists… for real, when in Paris, keep away from the
bike paths, here they’re worst than in Amsterdam!
Museus grátis todos
os primeiros domingos, antes do natal ainda vou ver a minha querida Olympia
outra vez!
Free entrance in the museums every first sunday
of the month, before christmas I’m going to see my dear Olympia again.
As coisas
destinam as lições...).
The amazing stuff I get to see in RTP
International (Ana will explain it).
calor.
The proving of the adaptation skills of the
cats, in the case: aunt Fatuxa and the heat sources.
The fact that parisians think that the scooter
is a reasonable transport for respectable grown-ups… I already lost count of
the fortyish suit and ties that I saw going by on the toy.
My friends feeling bond to write me, because I’m
“in diaspora”.
